The lakes of Killarney have been fished for millennia. Today they hold salmon, sea trout, brown trout and the remarkable Arctic char — a cold-water species that has survived in these lakes since glaciers covered Ireland, making Killarney one of the most historically significant fisheries in Europe.
What you can fish for
Where to fish
- Lough Leane — The largest of the three lakes and the most accessible. Boat hire available at Ross Castle. Brown trout and occasional salmon. Beautiful setting with Ross Castle as your backdrop.
- Muckross Lake — Home to the Arctic char population. Deeper and quieter than Lough Leane. Best accessed by boat from the Ross Castle area.
- River Laune — Flows from Lough Leane to the sea at Killorglin. One of Kerry's premier salmon rivers. Several beats available through the Killarney Angling Association.
- Upper Lake — The most remote of the three lakes, accessible via the Gap of Dunloe road. Quieter and often produces good brown trout on fly.
Guides & equipment
Several experienced local guides operate on the Killarney lakes and River Laune. A guided day is highly recommended for first-time visitors — local knowledge of where fish are running, which flies are working, and how to navigate the boats makes an enormous difference to success rates.
Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has a dedicated fishing secretary who can arrange guided days on the lakes for club guests and visitors. Alternatively, tackle shops on New Street can recommend independent guides.
