Purple Mountain sits on the eastern side of the Gap of Dunloe, rising to 832 metres above the MacGillycuddy's Reeks to the west and the Killarney lakes to the east. It is one of the most rewarding mountain hikes in the area for those who want genuine mountain views without the full commitment of Carrauntoohil โ€” a well-defined route, a clear summit and a panorama that takes in the Gap, the lakes and the full sweep of the Reeks.

Purple Mountain โ€” at a glance

The route

The standard route ascends from the Gap of Dunloe, climbing the northern ridge of Purple Mountain to the summit. The ascent is steep but straightforward โ€” there is no scrambling or technical terrain. From the summit the views in all directions are exceptional: the full length of the Gap below, Lough Leane and the town of Killarney to the east, the Reeks ridge to the west with Carrauntoohil dominant, and the Black Valley opening to the south.

From the summit of Purple Mountain you can see the full length of the Gap of Dunloe below โ€” one of the finest mountain views in Kerry.

Why choose Purple Mountain over Carrauntoohil

Purple Mountain offers a genuine mountain experience โ€” real height gain, exposed summit, big views โ€” without the navigation challenges and crowds of Carrauntoohil. It is a better choice for walkers who are fit and comfortable on open hillside but do not have mountain navigation experience. The route is well-defined and the summit is clear. It is also significantly less busy than Carrauntoohil, particularly on weekends.
