A good night in Killarney requires very little planning — pick a direction, walk through town, and follow the sound of music. The town punches well above its weight for live traditional sessions, and the standard is genuinely high.
Where to go
O'Connor's Bar
The most consistently excellent traditional music pub in Killarney. Small, warm and packed on session nights. The musicians are local — you'll hear real traditional music here, not a performance for tourists. The pint of Guinness is one of the best in town. Get there early to get a seat near the musicians.
Courtney's Bar
A proper old-school Killarney pub that hasn't changed much in decades — bare wood floors, shelves of memorabilia, and a real community atmosphere. Excellent traditional sessions at weekends. More local than tourist, which is exactly what you want.
The Laurels
One of Killarney's most popular live music bars — bigger than O'Connor's and more varied in its music offering. A mix of traditional and contemporary Irish music. Good craic, good atmosphere, often buzzing until late.
John M. Reidy's
Started life as a sweet shop in the 1870s and still feels packed with character. Traditional pub with occasional sessions. One of the most photogenic interiors in Killarney — a beautiful old bar with all the original fittings.
Scott's Bar & Restaurant
A larger venue with a full programme of live music throughout the summer. Popular with both tourists and locals. Good for a later-night option when the smaller pubs have wound down.
INEC — Gleneagle Arena
Killarney's main concert arena hosts major Irish and international acts throughout the year. Check inec.ie for the current programme. Has hosted everyone from Westlife to Rodrigo y Gabriela. The venue has a warm acoustic reputation for a space of its size.
A word of advice
"The best music in Killarney is often in the smallest rooms. Don't be put off by a pub that looks quiet from the outside — often the session hasn't started yet. Ask at the bar what time the musicians arrive. Showing genuine interest is always welcome."
